8 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Children

As parents, there are so many things completely out of our control. Even if you plan and order your child’s day from beginning to end, you are not in every thought, breath, and step they take. And in truth, that is not how God wants you to parent. A good friend regularly reminds me that God loves our children more than we do. Whether you are holding your newborn or dropping off your teen at school, there are times when that is hard to believe. But just as you walk through the successes and failures of your child’s life with them, just image how God, who wholly loves them, wants to walk with them.

Are you holding too tight? Are you trying to control what only God can control?

Prayer—meaning regular conversations with God about your children and for your children—is your best approach for asking and allowing God to work His will in their lives. Here are eight Scriptures to pray over your children starting today. You can do that by simply reading the Scripture and naming each child, meditating on the passage with each child in mind, or journaling your thoughts for each child while reading through the passage.

Over time, your anxious heart will settle on a particular prayer or passage for each of your children. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you in this, opening the door for Christ into your heart and the lives of your children.

Pray for Peace

The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.

Numbers 6:24-26

Lord, bless my child today, give them the desire to turn to you and grant them your peace.

Pray for Connection:

It is the Lord your God you must follow, and Him you must revere. Keep His commands and obey Him; serve Him and hold fast to Him.

Deuteronomy 13:4

Lord, draw my child to You today. Give them the opportunity to serve You and seek You.

Pray for Courage

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Deuteronomy 31:6

Lord, today give my child courage to face the trials of their day. Give them the comfort to know that You will never leave them or forsake them.

Pray for God to Be Glorified

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.

Matthew 5:16

Lord, guide my child to have a heart for You, to glorify You in their words and actions today.

Pray for a Heart for Prayer

Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Mark 11:24

Lord, show my child Your presence today. Allow them to know that You hear their prayers and love them.

Pray for God’s Plan

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ephesians 2:10

Lord, guide my child to seek Your purpose and plan for their lives. May Your will be done.

Pray for Faith

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Philippians 4:6

Lord, give my child the faith to bring every situation to You in prayer.

Pray for Boldness

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.

2 Timothy 1:7

Lord, grant my child boldness to stand in Your power and love against all that they encounter in the world today.
