Playing Through the Bible

I have a wiggly kid. He must be moving, dancing, fidgeting, twirling, swirling, or all of the above at the same time. As a young mother who wanted to really instill God’s Word in his heart, I had to get creative about ways to invite my son into experiencing the history and literature that leads us in knowing more about Jesus.

I am honored to share with you some of my favorite ways we have “played through the Bible” and leave you with a FREE three-day devotional full of activities to get you started!

Worship

One of the ways I could easily engage my son into what we would be learning about that day was through song! I didn’t grow up in church, so I had to become fluent in fun church songs for young kids. We would dance, play instruments, and just enjoy singing about our Savior!

Some of our favorites are:

Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name.

Psalm 103:1

Cooking

We have made many things inspired by the accounts we read in God’s Word. Whether it is a full meal or a quick snack, I always find a way to incorporate important cooking skills into our lessons for the week!

We have made:

  • Banana, peanut butter, and animal cracker snacks in honor of Noah
  • Strawberry hearts with homemade cream to learn about the Fruit of the Spirit (specifically love)
  • Fruit pizza cookies that look like the earth God created
  • Resurrection Rolls for Easter
  • Jonah and the fish jello cups

… and many more!

Give us today our daily bread.

Matthew 6:11

Act It Out

My boys surprise me with their acting skills every time we choose to “act out” a scene from the Bible. They gather supplies, figure out what they’re going to say, and put on a show!

We have recreated Jesus calming the storm with laundry baskets, the nativity with our dog and some sheets, and Noah’s ark with every single stuffed animal in our house! Let your kids be silly and creative, but always remind them of how that moment in time led us to Jesus saving us from our sin.

Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Deuteronomy 11:18-19

Games and Movement

We love games and competition over here. Sometimes a little too much! Anything I can turn into some sort of game, I go for it! Some of my go-to activities are scavenger hunts in the house (we have scavenged for wise men treasure, sheep, you name it!), obstacle courses, letting bubbles fall around us to practice self-control, and service projects where we deliver treats or cards to our neighbors.

As you ponder how you can incorporate more fun for your little ones during Bible time, remember they will only be as excited about the Bible as you are! What is important and fun to you will become a priority for them, as well.
