In part one of our Parenting Pathway Podcast series Raising Children in a Modern World, Family Ministry Pastor Dave Carl has a conversation with Linda Wylie, Ministry Leader of Student Ministries, and Chrissy Smith, Pastoral Leader of Stonebriar Women.

There is a growing trend with young people today, especially those raised in church: they believe they can go out in the world and engage in sin as their hearts desire, and then when they are older and ready to settle down, they will walk away from those activities and God will forgive them for their sins. The world does such a good job marketing a sinful lifestyle, and the church does such a bad job that the choice to follow the world seems very appealing. Modern parenting trends protect our kids from all negative consequences, even the consequences of not following Christ.

In this episode, we will break down this issue and talk about how parents can help paint a picture of God’s love, instilling a desire and motivation to truly follow Him. Is true obedience about following a list of rules, or is it about cultivating a heart that wants to live for Christ? If it is about a change of heart, how can parents encourage children to make wise choices?

  • Dave Carl is the Family Ministries Pastor at Stonebriar Community Church and is responsible for the ministry focusing on children birth through high school graduation and the parents who love them. With a ministry philosophy based on Luke 10:27, his primary focus is to give parents the skills to raise kids who truly love Jesus and want to serve others. Dave has a passion for ministering to families in crisis in our community. He has spent several years pouring into fathers and husbands and helping them learn that they need community, were designed to guard and protect, and that they really can be the spiritual leaders of their family.

    Dave and his wife of 30 plus years, Cathy, have two adult children and one in college and grandparents to three amazing children. They are completely in love with these new member of their family. Dave is an avid woodworker and loves to write. He sees all stories in the form of pictures, and he would love to connect with you!

  • Chrissy Smith

    As Lead Pastoral Leader of Stonebriar Women, Chrissy has the privilege of serving Stonebriar Women by connecting them with others as they grow in their relationship with the Lord in small groups or individual relationships, as well as equipping them for serving in all ways the Lord leads them. Chrissy also serves on the Lead Pastor team to enjoin with all ministries to pursue the vision God has for Stonebriar.

  • As Ministry Leader of High School, Linda's role is to disciple and lead high school students and leaders. Her goal is to inspire students to love God and love others, equipping them to rescue and protect their lost and isolated peers. She and husband Kevin have been married more than 25 years, and have two college age children.
