Parenting Pathway Podcast is hosted by Pastor Dave Carl. A discussion about raising boys to be men in a world where men are not taught what that looks like.

When David’s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in His ways and keeping His statutes, His commandments, His rules, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn.

Recently, Pastor Dave Carl, Associate Pastor of Young Adults Brandon Fletcher, and Associate Family Ministry Pastors Nathan Kocurek, David Ake, and Ren Nelson sat down to talk about raising boys to be men in a culture where boys are seldom taught about manhood. Using author John Eldredge’s book, The Way of the Wild Heart, A Map for the Masculine Journey as their guide, these men share their own stories of absent fathers and missed life lessons.

A boy becoming a man should follow a model or path of the men who have gone before him. When a male role model is missing in a boy’s life, he is left to his own devices to figure out life’s lessons on his own. In this discussion, we look at how God wants to father our sons and take them on a journey in pursuit of manhood. Over a lifetime, a man’s journey should move from boy, to cowboy, to warrior, to lover, to king, to sage. Join the conversation and find out what it means to be a man in God’s eyes.

  • Dave Carl is the Family Ministries Pastor at Stonebriar Community Church and is responsible for the ministry focusing on children birth through high school graduation and the parents who love them. With a ministry philosophy based on Luke 10:27, his primary focus is to give parents the skills to raise kids who truly love Jesus and want to serve others. Dave has a passion for ministering to families in crisis in our community. He has spent several years pouring into fathers and husbands and helping them learn that they need community, were designed to guard and protect, and that they really can be the spiritual leaders of their family.

    Dave and his wife of 30 plus years, Cathy, have two adult children and one in college and grandparents to three amazing children. They are completely in love with these new member of their family. Dave is an avid woodworker and loves to write. He sees all stories in the form of pictures, and he would love to connect with you!

  • Brandon Fletcher

    As Associate Pastor of Family Ministries at Stonebriar Community Church, Brandon helps parents and their kids love God and love others.

  • Nathan Kocurek

    Emerging from the depths of the late 1970s, Nathan Kocurek spent his formative years under the influence of Hall & Oates, Duran Duran, and other notables while listening to KRBE in Houston on the clock radio beside his bed. Nathan was influenced to love Jesus by the example of his young single mom, and he grew up with a love for God but an incomplete understanding of discipleship. As a result, as a teenager, he indulged in a relentless and, at times, reckless pursuit of social and athletic achievements, seeking to assuage an innermost feeling of emptiness that he could not escape. Finally, by God’s grace, the Spirit of the Lord made it clear to him that none but Jesus could satisfy what he was lacking. The answer had been there all along. Later, Nathan married the girl of his dreams and they ran off to California, had two sons, and returned to Texas where they adopted their sweet daughter. Having served as a Student Minister at two previous churches over the past 18 years, Nathan and his wife, Marie, are now thrilled to follow the calling of Christ at Stonebriar Community Church.

  • David and Jamie Ake

    David Ake joined the Stonebriar team in 2007 as part of our student ministry teams and pastor to seventh- and eighth-graders. He brings with him years of experience in youth ministry, a master’s degree in biblical studies from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a passion for mentoring young men to authentically know and love Christ. David has a rich spiritual heritage. His father, a full-blooded Mayan Indian from the Yucatan Peninsula, and his mother, a native of Chile, were missionaries and church planters along the Texas-Mexico border. David walks through life with his wife, Jamie, and they share their journey with  two amazing daughters.

  • Nikki and Ren Nelson

    Ren has been married to his beautiful wife, Nikki, for seven years. They have two preschool boys, Quinn and August. As Associate Pastor of Preteen Ministry, Ren loves seeing the transformation that happens in the lives of our preteens as they grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. His hobbies include: playing with his two boys, road trips, trying new things, and binge-watching Netflix. One of his favorite things to do is to go hiking with his wife.

    Dave Carl… My dear brother, I have to correct you! This sister was not in the house working on Saturday mornings. By the time you were working in the yard, I was working at a job. That was my only way out of working in the yard. I graduated to a paying job. Thanks for that walk down memory lane though! I love you. Hugs, Gail
