In this Parenting Pathway Podcast, Pastor Dave Carl has invited Young Adults Associate Pastor Brandon Fletcher and Student Ministries Associate Pastor Nathan Kocurek to talk about what they see in their ministries as the kids raised by helicopter and lawnmower parents start to reach adulthood.
They share in this podcast that most of these young adults were raised by parents with the best intentions to protect them from harm, shield them from the realities of the world we live in, and push them to excel in something as long as they were the best. All this sheltering and pushing has created a generation of young adults who are not prepared for the consequences of real life actions, and are often surprised when they find out they are not the best, or little value for the years of hard work. This first brush with reality as an adult is made harder by the lack of experience usually gained through their teenage years. These young adults usually lack the skills, life experience, and character strength to overcome the obstacles they are facing for the first time as adults.
It is easy to think this does not apply to me, but there is not a parent in the world who has not stepped in when they probably should have stayed back. Letting go and letting God parent your child through life’s ups and downs is so challenging but has huge rewards on the other side.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
This week, we want to encourage you step back and leave room to allow our kids to face tough challenges head-on. Challenge your kids to learn to lean on God for parenting (not us parents). Life is an adventure in learning to love God and love others, so let’s encourage them to crave that adventure.
